Web 2.0 versus Web 3.0

In writing this year's BMJ editorial (Christmas issue, watch for it), I tried to list the different features of web 2.0 and 3.0, and came up with a few obvious points of comparison. What else should be added?

web 2.0................................................web 3.0

. ‘the document web’ .............................‘the data web’

. information abundance .........................information control

. controversial .................................... no less controversial

. ‘the social web ................................. ‘the intelligent web’

. the second decade 2000-2009 ............. the third decade 2010-2020

. Google as catalyst ............................. Semantic web companies as catalyst

. wisdom of the crowds ......................... wisdom of the expert

. mashups, fragmentation ..................... integration, new mashup tools

. search, search, search ...................... why search, when you can find?

. Pagerank .......................................... ontologies, semantic systems

. lawless, anarchic ................................ standards, protocols, rules

. print and digital ................................... digital above all else

. I search, therefore I am ........................I find, therefore I create

'Google Presentation' announced

Google continues to move into territory formerly occupied (and dominated, even monopolized) by Microsoft Office. The latest application is Google Presentation - similar to what Microsoft's PowerPoint offers, 'Google presentation' can be used to create presentations, including a series of slides with text and graphics on them. The entire Docs suite is available for free at http://documents.google.com

But don't forget the Web is full of alternatives to standalone software - try Zoho, which has more online collaboration tools than Google (word processor, spreadsheet, slideshow/presentation, meetings, database, project management and a few others). It's free like Google, but with an "enterprise" option with tech support, single sign in (which you get free in Google), more security and company-wide control. Zoho offers a chat tool as well, and while not integrated like in Google, its tools have been around for a while and offer options.
